The Simhastha Kumbh Mela returns to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar in 2027, twelve years after the last one in 2015. It is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, held on the banks of the Godavari at Ramkund in Panchavati and at Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar.
Har Har Mahadev Tours & Travels is based in Panchavati, a short drive from Ramkund, and has been running pilgrim groups to Trimbakeshwar since 2006. This guide covers the officially announced dates, what peak days are like on the road, and how to plan vehicle travel for your family or mandal.
Dates below are from the schedule announced by the Government of Maharashtra. Always check the official Kumbh Mela website and Nashik police traffic advisories before you travel, since local arrangements are announced closer to each bathing day.
Kumbh Mela 2027: Official Key Dates
The Amrit Snan (earlier called Shahi Snan) days are when the akhadas take their ceremonial dip and crowds are at their highest. The state has also announced many other bathing (parva snan) dates across 2027 and 2028, and has asked devotees to spread their visits rather than rush on the three main days.
| Event | Date | Place |
|---|---|---|
| Dhwajarohan (flag hoisting), Kumbh period begins | 31 October 2026 | Ramkund, Panchavati and Trimbakeshwar |
| Nagar Pradakshina | 29 July 2027 | Nashik |
| First Amrit Snan (Ashadh Somvati Amavasya) | Monday, 2 August 2027 | Nashik and Trimbakeshwar |
| Second Amrit Snan (Shravan Amavasya) | 31 August 2027 | Nashik and Trimbakeshwar |
| Third Amrit Snan, Nashik | 11 September 2027 | Ramkund, Nashik |
| Third Amrit Snan, Trimbakeshwar | 12 September 2027 | Kushavarta Kund, Trimbakeshwar |
| Kumbh period ends | July 2028 | Nashik and Trimbakeshwar |
Nashik or Trimbakeshwar: Where Does the Kumbh Happen?
Both. The Nashik Kumbh is unique because it is held at two places about 30 km apart. Vaishnav akhadas bathe at Ramkund on the Godavari in Panchavati, Nashik. Shaiva akhadas bathe at Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar, near the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple and the source of the Godavari.
Many families plan both: Ramkund and Kalaram Mandir in Panchavati on one day, and Trimbakeshwar darshan with a Kushavarta snan on another. Doing both on an Amrit Snan day is not practical because of traffic restrictions between the two towns.
How Big Will the Crowds Be?
The state's planning documents project around 12 crore pilgrim visits across the full Kumbh period, with the core mela running from roughly June to September 2027. Peak-day crowds are concentrated at the Nashik ghats, Trimbakeshwar temple area, sadhugram camps, and parking zones.
For families with senior citizens or children, a normal bathing date or a weekday in the Kumbh period is far more comfortable than an Amrit Snan day.
How to Reach Nashik for the Kumbh
Nashik Road railway station is the main rail gateway, and Nashik airport at Ozar has limited domestic flights. Most groups from Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh come by road.
| From | Approx distance by road | Other options |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | 165-185 km, 3.5 to 5 hours | Trains to Nashik Road station |
| Pune | About 210 km, 5 to 6 hours | Trains via Manmad or road |
| Shirdi | About 90 km, 2 to 2.5 hours | Road only |
| Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) | About 190 km, 4 to 5 hours | Road or rail via Manmad |
| Ujjain / Indore | About 470-500 km to Ujjain | Road via Dhule |
Vehicle Movement on Amrit Snan Days
During the 2015 Kumbh, private vehicles and tourist buses were stopped at designated parking areas on the city outskirts on main bathing days, and pilgrims walked or took shuttle buses to the ghats. Expect a similar traffic plan in 2027.
In practice this means: your tempo traveller or bus will drop you at an allotted parking zone, not at Ramkund or Kushavarta. Walking distances from parking to the ghats can be several kilometres on peak days, so plan accordingly for elderly travellers.
- Check the official traffic and parking plan a few days before your date
- Share the exact parking zone with your driver and fix a meeting point
- Keep phones charged and write the driver's number on paper for elderly members
- Carry ID for every traveller, water, and light snacks
- Avoid driving between Nashik and Trimbakeshwar on Amrit Snan days
Choosing a Vehicle for Your Kumbh Group
Rates include the driver and fuel. Tolls, parking, state permits for groups coming from outside Maharashtra, and driver allowance are charged separately and listed before booking.
| Group size | Vehicle | Listed rate (AC / Non-AC) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 7 | Innova Crysta | ₹18/km (AC) |
| 8 to 13 | 13 seater tempo traveller | ₹25/km / ₹21/km |
| 14 to 16 | Force Urbania (premium) | ₹33/km (AC) |
| 14 to 17 | 17 seater tempo traveller | ₹28/km / ₹23/km |
| 18 to 26 | 20 or 26 seater tempo traveller | ₹30-₹37/km / ₹25-₹30/km |
| 27 to 35 | 35 seater bus | ₹60/km / ₹42/km |
| 36 to 49 | 40 or 49 seater bus | ₹63-₹70/km / ₹45-₹52/km |
Book Early for Kumbh Dates
Tempo travellers and buses in Nashik get booked well in advance for Amrit Snan dates, and the Kumbh overlaps with Shravan, when Trimbakeshwar is already busy. Mandals and societies planning for August or September 2027 should fix vehicles several months ahead.
If your dates are flexible, choose a regular bathing date. Crowds, parking walks, and vehicle availability are all much easier.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the first Amrit Snan of Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027?
The first Amrit Snan is on Monday, 2 August 2027, at both Nashik (Ramkund) and Trimbakeshwar (Kushavarta Kund).
When does the Nashik Kumbh Mela start and end?
The Kumbh period begins with flag hoisting on 31 October 2026 and runs until July 2028. The three Amrit Snans fall in August and September 2027.
Can a tempo traveller go up to Ramkund on Amrit Snan day?
Usually not. On main bathing days vehicles are stopped at designated parking areas, and pilgrims walk or use shuttle buses to the ghats. Check the official traffic plan for your date.
Can we visit Shirdi or Saptashrungi during the Kumbh trip?
Yes. Shirdi is about 90 km and Saptashrungi about 65 km from Nashik. Plan them on days that are not Amrit Snan days, when roads around Nashik are less restricted.
